African Material and Waist beads

What is the difference between Kente cloth, prints, and Ankara fabrics?

Kente cloth refers to the handwoven cloth that originated in Ghana and was exclusively worn by the royals of the Ashanti Kingdom, and continues to be proudly worn by Ghanaian people for traditional and prestigious occasions. Authentic woven kente has a distinct texture, heavyweight, and minimal stretch. We currently do not have woven kente cloth on the online store, however, you can send us an inquiry if interested.

Printed kente cloth are printed fabrics of traditional kente designs. They are 100% cotton cloth and industrially produced using the wax-resist dye technique. Printed fabrics that are not kente designs are referred to as Ankara prints (and also known as entuma).

Kente and Ankara printed fabrics are much lighter than traditional woven kente cloth, however, the heft of the wax print fabrics has a thicker texture compared to a cotton t-shirt.

What can kente or ankara fabric be used for?

Both fabrics can be used to make clothing, accessories, handbags, tablecloths, and decorative items. There are many options when experimenting with African printed materials.

What sizes do the waist beads come in?

All the waist beads come in the same length (100”). Depending on your waist size you may cut the string and excess beads to make it smaller, or add additional beads to one another to make it larger.

How many waist beads do I wear at a time?

There is no set number of beads one should wear, it depends on your preference. Some like to wear only 1-2 at a time, others prefer to wear 8-10 at a time.
